The Strokes/Muse with The Like (REVIEW)

The Strokes/Muse with The Like
UC Davis ARC Pavilion in Davis/Sacramento, CA
28 September 2006

Words cannot describe how incredible Muse was. Not only are they incredible guys, but they put on a performance that is thrilling and mesmerizing (and it's not because those thousands of people behind and next to you are moshing). Absolution is my favorite album from them and I was disappointed with Black Holes and Revelation, but their live performance changed my mind about their latest album. I absolutely love the track "Supermassive Black Hole", and it's so much better live. Of course the best songs they performed live were off of Absolution. Their music sounds so much more hardcore to me than it did before after seeing how their live performances went. The only downside to their performance is that people are too obsessed with trying to get front row. If you fucking want front row, wait in line early lazy ass bitches.

I have always liked The Like, but today they creeped me out, or at least Z Berg did. So I know SOME of the lyrics, so what? She found me interesting and could not stop staring at me. Maybe she remembered what I said to her at Coachella or maybe she just found it interesting that no one knew who they were until they opened for The Strokes/Muse except for this random guy.

The Strokes were so fun to watch live. Their performance definitely doesn't beat Muse though. Muse killed them in that category. I was hoping they'd perform "Fear Of Sleep", but their best song they performed was "Take It Or Leave It". And their cover of Lou Reed's "Walk On The Wild Side" was fantastic. They performed mostly tracks off their latest album, but also performed a few oldies. The only members of the band that really kept me awake and whom I was a fan of from the start has got to be Albert and Fab. Jules was better than expected and he was really exciting to watch. It's pretty cool that Drew Barrymore came to support her man in Davis. She was making out with him throughout The Like's set and she actually came out to the floor to dance with Muse while The Strokes were performing onstage.

Downsides of the event overall: A stupid security guard who doesn't know what the hell a setlist is. He really shouldn't be working front stage security. And he's rude. And the venue's policy on cameras. No cameras? Even non-professional cameras? That's bullshit.

Live at Lollapalooza 2006

Stars: Live at Lollapalooza 8/4/06 is the somewhat latest live album featuring, as the title says, all live tracks from Stars' performance at Chicago's Lollapalooza this year. It's a must-have for any Stars fan. They sound incredible on these live tracks and I'm sure they sound even more amazing when seeing them live physically. Also there are a bunch of other live albums and EPs of performances from Lollapalooza as well from artists such as Ben Kweller, Broken Social Scene, Editors, The Go! Team, and Matt Costa. They are all available now on iTunes.

When are you going to see these guys on a small club tour again? Possibly never! So what Mark Hoppus and Travis Barker are in the band? The music's good and is less mainstream I think than Blink 182. And we can't forget the other members of the band. It seems almost no one knows who the fuck they are, but that will soon change. They are hitting the road and will be supporting their first full-length album due out November 14, 2006 off of Interscope!

El Gran Silencio/Los Abandoned
Place: CSUS Ballroom
Date: 22 September 2006

El Gran Silencio
was alright and a very talented band, but it's definitely not my type of music that I would listen to. Their music is kind of fun to mosh to too. Instead, it was Los Abandoned who surprised me. I've seen them live before, and found them dull and did not think much of them, but last night they were amazing. LADY P. really reminds me of a mix between Leslie Feist and Emily Haines. She looks like Feist and has the energy of Haines. Their music reminds me of Metric too, which makes sense because she's a fan of Metric's.

Sondre Lerche's 'Phantom Punch'

Sondre Lerche

While some may have mixed feelings about Sondre Lerche's new track "Phantom Punch", which is the first single off of his upcoming album of the same name , I love it! It's a little different from his other stuff and interesting. Phantom Punch is scheduled to be released on February 6th and is Lerche's "third full-length album with his band, the Faces Down," but for now you can continue listening to Duper Sessions. Now, I just hope that Kings of Convenience will release another album soon and I'll be even more happy. "Phantom Punch" can be downloaded on iTunes and be heard on Lerche's Myspace.

'An Inconvenient Truth'

An Inconvenient Truth

Although I have strong views on global warming, coming into Al Gore's documentary An Inconvenient Truth, I thought it was going to be dull and was like watching a lecture. Gore does lecture of course, but he did not make it dull. It is the type of film that some people may just watch once, or some may watch it a few times, but it is very informative. It made me more aware of global warming than before and I'm sure it gave a whole new meaning to global warming for those who never would think twice about the issue. The only disappointment of the film was that he did not touch on the possibility of Earth going into another Ice Age nor did he speak about why people would claim that global warming does not exist. It was a one-sided argument and in order to really let people aware on the matter is by arguing against those who think global warming is not happening.

Light A Fire Tour 2006

Martin Storrow was a surprise at CSUS. He was a surprise because he's a really great guitarist who comes from San Diego. When you can play folk music like he does on an acoustic guitar, I applaud you. His voice reminds me of The Calling and doesn't really stand out to me. There's something about his voice that bothers me, although everything else about him is great. You can't have it all I guess. He will be back in town in Orangevale, CA at Club Retro tomorrow, September 23rd at 6:30pm.

America Welcomes Borat! (Film Review)

Borat

I have never seen a room full of people laugh so hard in my life! I don't even recall laughing so much in one film. It is disgusting, yet random. I applaud Sacha Baron Cohen for having the ability to make us laugh A LOT. It's a mix of fiction and non-fiction. If you hadn't known already, Borat comes from Kazakhstan and heads to America to film his travels there. There were times where I felt he was being too racist, but when I look at it in a different point of view that I realize maybe he's not being racist, but just making us realize the many stereotypes that are out there that we are afraid to comment on or acknowledge in public. Although, his comments on Jews were funny, but it was definitely wrong and cruel! Everyone needs a good laugh though as long as he isn't truly hurting anybody. He actually makes really good points in the film like what he says about President Bush. Possibly the funniest scene was the scene between Borat and Azamat Bagatov (Ken Davitian). And having Pamela Anderson in the film definitely adds to the craziness of the film. The film lasts for 82 minutes, but it is well worth watching. People waited hours to see this film so why wouldn't it be worth it?

When it comes out in theaters on NOVEMBER 3RD, don't miss out on what's the funniest film of the year. And yes, Borat is so much better than Jean Girrard.

Ryan's Leave

Maroon 5

It's unfortunate that drummer Ryan from Maroon 5 has to leave the band after all these years after his injury. I did not realize that it would affect him for a longer time than expected.

From Maroon 5's Myspace:

"A MESSAGE FROM RYAN TO THE MAROON 5 FAMILY:

Due to the rigors of touring, I have sustained joint and nerve injuries that have made me unable to continue performing as a drummer in a touring rock band. I am therefore leaving Maroon 5 to pursue songwriting and producing on my own, a process I have already begun with much enthusiasm.

The split is amicable, and I have made my peace with this unfortunate reality, because I feel that I have a lot of music still to make. I worked in the creative process and production of the new M5 album with the title Musical Director, and I hope to collaborate with the band again in the future. I am still close friends with the guys, including my replacement, Matt Flynn, to whom I wish good luck and much success.

I would also like to thank all of you who have supported me for many years, and I hope to create music for you in the near future. Its been an incredible twelve years since Adam, Jesse, Mickey and I started this band. Now I begin a new phase in my life, to which I look forward graciously. Thank you, and I love you all."

Yellow Bird Project

Yellow Bird Project, an organization from Montreal, has been collaborating with musicians on creating tees to be sold for charity. For a $25 donation, you get tees that are designed by bands like Stars, Wolfmother, and ClapYour Hands Say Yeah. And they are all printed on American Apparel.

Their mission:

"Yellow Bird Project is a Montreal-based, non-profit initiative. We collaborate with musicians in designing a T-shirt, we print and sell them on our website, and all of the money we make goes to charity. Which charity? Each of the artists gets to choose their own. We have three fundamental aims:

1) To make money for charities directly through T-shirt sales.

2) To raise awareness for charity organizations through artists’ endorsement.

3) To raise the profile of the artists we like.

We have specifically approached individuals that we think are creative and conscientious enough to make a difference."

Of Montreal 2007 Tour Info

Of Montreal

With a new album due out on January 23rd on Polyvinyl Records called Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer?, Of Montreal are already planning their early 2007 tour. Maybe they'll be hitting up Nor Cal on a couple of dates we'll see...

Highlights include two free college shows, slots at the Pygmalion Festival and LA Weekly Detour Festival, and a gig at the Beck-curated NextFest kickoff concert. The Late B.P. Helium, aka Of Montreal man Bryan Pool, has but one show lined up-- November 1 at Brooklyn's Northsix club. A few additional CMJ dates may be in the works. According to Barnes, the Late B.P. Helium might be writing right now, but likely hasn't started to anything at this point.

Film Review

Zach Braff & Jacinda Barrett in The Last Kiss

I finally saw The Last Kiss yesterday and I don't appreciate being carded. I was not able to make it to a pre-screening because it was too far for my to drive that night. Basically, I love Zach Braff. Many of us do. It was a great film, but some of the storylines were unnecessary and should have been cut out. I did not like Rachel Bilson in the film because her character was annoying and immature. I actually am not a fan of Rachel's at all, but that fact really did not affect my review on her character in the film. Zach Braff was hilarious in some parts. It was a serious love story, and everyone in the theater did not laugh in some of the scenes except for my friend and I. Maybe we're weird, I don't know, but it really was funny if you look at it in a different way.

[SPOILERS AHEAD]

In the scene where Braff and Jacinda's character were fighting was hilarious to me. She calls him a "slut" then points a huge knife at him, which is usually scary of course, but Braff's expression was funny. There was also way too many sex scenes in the film, which I find pointless to the storyline. It all revolves around his pointless friend too.

The Last Kiss is a great film overall and I do recommend it, but just don't take your kiddies along. It is well worth watching.

It's About Time! TVOTR Review

TV On The Radio's Return To Cookie Mountain

I finally finished listening to TV On The Radio's major album debut, Return To Cookie Mountain. Despite all the leaks on the Internet, I stopped myself from listening to any of it besides two of the tracks until I buy the album when it gets released in the US. So it was definitely worth the wait! Some of the tracks are a bit random if you know what I mean, but hey bring on the randomness, I love random. Overall, it's fine work from the guys and very well-produced. I still love "Staring At The Sun" and "Dreams", but this album beats their debut Desperate Youth, Blood Thirsty Babes. I'm all hyped up for their headlining show in Sacramento at The Library later this month. If you like their album and music, you must see them live because their sound is different live, but they sound so good. Highlights off the album are "Wolf Like Me", "Blues From Down Here", "Tonight", and everything else on the album including the random tracks.

1. I Was A Lover
2. Hours
3. Province
4. Playhouses
5. Wolf Like Me
6. A Method
7. Let The Devil In
8. Dirty Whirl
9. Blues From Down Here

Definitely Bringin' Sexy Back...

Justin Timberlake's FutureSex/LoveSounds

I have not commented on Justin Timberlake's latest album, but here it is. I have to admit that "Sexy Back" is one of my favorite mainstream songs of the year. It's catchy and actually good compared to other tracks by other mainstream artists. When I first heard his album, FutureSex/LoveSounds in its entirety, I hesitated. I didn't think it was good at all except for "Sexy Back", but it grew on me. There are times on the album where he tries too hard and ends up sounding really silly like "Chop Me Up", but it's still a great track. "FutureSex/LoveSound" has some sexy lyrics, but I think the beats are amazing. I thought "My Love" reminded me too much of some tracks off of his Justified album and I did not think it should have been his next single, but now that I listen to it, it's a good song. "... What Goes Around... Comes Around (Interlude)" clearly is about Britney even though like expected he denies it is. It's a much better album and makes Justified sound like shit now.

Tracklisting:

1. Futuresex/Lovesound
2. Sexyback - Timbaland, Justin Timberlake
3. Sexy Ladies/Let Me Talk to You (Prelude)
4. My Love - T.I., Justin Timberlake
5. Love Stoned/I Think She Knows (Interlude)
6. ...What Goes Around...Comes Around (Interlude)
7. Chop Me Up - Three 6 Mafia, Timbaland, Justin Timberlake
8. Damn Girl - Justin Timberlake,
9. Summer Love/Set the Mood (Prelude)
10. Until the End of Time
11. Losing My Way
12. (Another Song) All Over Again

You Will Feel Like Dancing... With The Scissor Sisters!

Scissor Sisters' Ta-Dah (Release Date: September 26, 2006)

Just as enjoyable as their self-titled album, it is a lot more listenable I think. Scissor Sisters' latest album, Ta-Dah starts out with the track "I Don't Feel Like Dancin'", but clearly it will make you feel like dancing. There's nothing more to say about this album. It's been one of the hyped up albums and the past year they have blown up. Catch them live if you can because they are so fun to watch. Actually, it's a must. Highlight of the album is "Might Tell You Tonight".

Download "Kiss You Off"

Tracklisting:

1. I Don’t Feel Like Dancin’
2. She’s My Man
3. I Can’t Decide
4. Lights
5. Land of a Thousand Words
6. Intermission
7. Kiss You Off
8. Ooh
9. Paul McCartney
10. The Other Side
11. Might Tell You Tonight
12. Everybody Wants the Same Thing

Here We GO Sacramento!

Bobby Lee, Dirty Eggroll

Welcome to Rice Rocket! Stripper name: Dirty Eggroll. Last night's comedy act by MadTV's Bobby Lee was racist, but it was okay because it was hilarious. Performing in front of a packed house at Sacramento State, Bobby Lee exceeded my expectations and more. It was either many of us felt we could relate to his jokes, or if we just thought he was funny, but I thought it was both. He really focused on Asians and I enjoyed that because it's not always you find a popular Asian comedian performing jokes about your culture. He mentioned about Asians always looking younger than their age (not true due to personal experiences!) until they turn 60 and then they wake up the next morning looking like Gollum and Yoda! And his striptease was fucking brilliant. He came out in a white loin cloth that looked like a diaper that was too small. It was fine until he grabbed himself, which made me cringe.

It was great when she did "Promiscuous" and "Sexy Back". I've heard great things about Butterscotch and they were all completely true.

Lyrics Born was everything I expected. There was a really good turnout, but I was hoping it would be even more packed like it was at Goapele last year. The highlight of the evening was when he performed "Callin' Out" as it's my favorite track from him.

Local bands and a very well-known performer to Sacramento came out to perform at the Sunbash Saturday Outdoor Concert also at CSUS. The bill included Headrush, Pets, The Proles, and Jonah Matranga. Headrush was great, The Proles had a rockstar attitude about them, which to me is just typical, but they were awesome live for a local band and remind me a bit of The Strokes. Jonah Matranga played a long and fulfilling acoustic set. As much as his fans enjoyed his set, I felt tired and bored from it because it lasted for so long. Pets were the ones that surprised me the most and who I enjoyed the most. They are a cross between Le Tigre and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. It was breathtaking to hear a great local band like them live.

Psst Get 'Em Quick

It's already going to be one amazing tour, but as previously announced before, Art Brut and We Are Scientists are covering each others' song. They've finished recording the covers and will be available at shows during the co-headlining tour this fall beginning September 18th. WAS did a cover of "Bang Bang Rock & Roll" while Art Brut covered "The Great Escape". How do these tracks sound like? According to NME, "'Bang Bang Rock & Roll' like the Velvet Underground, in response to Art Brut's lyrics 'I don't like the sound of the Velvet Underground, I don't like the sound that second time around'" and Art Brut recreated 'The Great Escape' as a "homage to Lynyrd Skynyrd's 'Free Bird'."

MTV Makes Me Want To Smoke Crack

Boring. Boring. Boring. MTV should be called RTV for Reality Television. True, there's MTV2, but then what's the point of regular MTV? And not every fucking person gets MTV2. Total Request Live? That show only shows portions of music videos so I don't see the point in that show. It's repetitive and it's sickening. If you're going to do a countdown of top 10 music videos, then show the whole motherfucking video. And MTV is basically all reality television shows that has NOTHING to do with music whatsoever. I don't see no relation between the shows Laguna Beach, The Hills, Real World/Road Rules, True Life etc. and the title of the channel Music Television. You don't see no music on those shows. The Video Music Awards is a fucking JOKE. It gets more boring each year, but even when it's exciting it's still a joke. It is nothing compared to the Grammys of course, but the AMAs, the Billboard Music Awards are so much better and actually more meaningful than the VMAs. The VMAs aren't even meaningful. On a scale of 1-100 on how meaningful the VMAs are, it's in the negative numbers. It's not even at the number zero. In fact, the number is nonexistent. It's not even pie or a variable. It doesn't exist. It's stupid. MTV please stop. The VMAs aren't even important enough for fucking Lindsay Lohan to show up.

And Beyonce's performance was great? She sucks. Someone really needs to ring the alarm because her new song hurts my ears. And those fuckin robot moves Beyonce tried doing reminded me of Janet and Michael Jackson. The Pussycat Dolls? They should be excited to win that VMA because that's the only award they'll ever get. And what they did to The Raconteurs at the VMAs was fucked up. No band, whether they're good or bad, deserves to get to play 15 second snippets of their songs and then get cut off for some slut like Jessica Simpson or for the worst host ever Jack Black. I'm sure they were pissed off because I would be pissed off too. I like Jack Black, I do, but not as a host. Sarah Silverman was the only good part of the show. I liked Justin Timberlake's performance only because I actually think it is good mainstream music especially compared to other mainstream shit on the radio. I should probably have stopped watching the VMAs after 10 minutes, but I was hoping something actually good would come on later, but apparently not. At the beginning of the show Jay-Z sounded like he was having trouble talking, which brings me to Diddy. If you've gotten education, especially college education, then please talk straight. I respect them. I do. I respect them for being entertainment moguls, but it's annoying when people claim or try to be role models for people in the business because even if they don't admit it, they are role models for listeners and viewers, and for them to not be able to fucking say a full word is stupid. You're not fucking dumb or mental. Why are you talking like that? And for those people who try to be who they aren't like K-Fed... don't try and act like you lived a horrible life. You're just fake.

What has the media come to these days in the US? It's not so bad in the UK or in Canada or in other countries. Oh wait I know why, because most kids these days are self-conscious and want to look like a toothpick. And they want to fuck with their bodies and don't care about anything because they're living a better life than their parents. There is a FUCKING DIFFERENCE between being healthy versus being anorexic. Go look it up on fucking Wikipedia. And stop it with the emo look unless you are actually emo and depressed. Actually I don't even want to call it an emo look because there is no emo look. If you're depressed and you hate the world and everyone then you probably have the emo look. So Panic! At The Disco should stop too because The Killers are still better than them. I liked Panic! for awhile, but the more they get mainstreamed, the horrible they get personality wise and performance wise. And Jared Leto should stop trying so hard. I have less respect for him the longer he carries that look around. At least Gerard from MCR changed his hair.
