It can be fresh and breathtaking when artists and bands cover songs that sound just as good as the original, but at the same time it's difficult because usually the original is always better. With Nouvelle Vague it may not be better to some, but it certainly is fresh and unique to hear these 80s songs in a different light. Joy Division's "Love Will Tear Us Apart" has been covered by possibly every single band in existence by now from Calexico to Fall Out Boy to U2 and Arcade Fire, but Nouvelle Vague turns it into a smoky ballad. Nouvelle Vague is a cross between Kings of Convenience and Brazilian Girls with its smooth jazz and vocals, and its acoustics. "In A Manner Speaking" is haunting and beautiful, and brings some sort of sadness to it. The vocals itself gives you chills, which is perfect with the tone of the song. "This Is Not A Love Song" has an R&B feel to it with its beats. The vocals in "Too Drunk To Fuck" really bring the essence of well... being too drunk to fuck. Other highlights include "I Melt With You" and "Teenage Kicks".
