The Flaming Lips/Ween
22 July 2006 Saturday
Greek Theatre $49
Berkeley, CA
It was a fucking amazing show. I'm so glad I chose to go the last minute luckily due to an extra ticket. Part of my goals have definitely been fulfilled as I finally got to see The Flaming Lips live. Another goal that I'd like to complete is to meet Wayne Coyne since he's definitely one of the Top 5 people I want to meet who fascinate me. One day hopefully, one day. Anyways, I arrived just in time at the show for Ween and I was still able to get a good spot so I didn't get to see the opening act Liars, who I heard everyone booed. Poor things. I haven't heard much from them except for two songs I must say. They were better than I thought. Some of their music don't interest me, but there were songs that stuck out for me and I liked them. They were really good performers especially since they didn't need any special effects or visuals to surprise the crowd and get them into the show. Their guitar solos were good, but not great when compared to other bands. What disappointed me a lot was that Ween did a full and long set, while The Flaming Lips had to cut short their set because of a damn curfew.
The Flamings Lips were so good. I think they would probably be boring without all the visuals, but WITH the visuals they just made their performance even better. It tops every other performance visually. The many balloons, streamers, and confetti filled the Greek Theatre. Fans picked out and dressed in alien and Santa costumes filled the stage as dancers. The song performances that really stood out were the Yeah Yeah Yeah Song and The W.A.N.D. that really makes you want to jump and knock people over, which isn't very polite, but what the hell. The set started out with Wayne crawling in a bubble over the crowd. I was lucky enough to be in the front row and right where he was getting lifted off onto the crowd. Both arms up people! I was hoping that he didn't stop doing that. Some of the set was predictable for fans who have seen their performances before, but it is still amazing. I'd see them again and again if I could because that's how good they are.
