The Rolling Stones' North American Tour

From Billboard:

July 25, 2006, 11:00 AM ET
Ray Waddell, Nashville

The Rolling Stones will return to North American for another leg of their A Bigger Bang tour, which is destined to be the top-grossing trek in history. The second North American leg, which follows a run of European stadiums, will launch on Sept. 20 at Boston's Gillette Stadium. The dates will be sponsored by RadioShack.

The Stones are the top-grossing band in the world for the first half of 2006, with nearly $150 million in grosses and 1.1 million in attendance, according to Billboard Boxscore. A Bigger Bang is expected to ultimately ring up total box office of more than $400 million.

The band will play primarily stadiums in such markets as New York, Boston, Chicago, Seattle, Los Angeles, Phoenix and Las Vegas. The run includes such non-traditional tour markets as Halifax, Nova Scotia, Missoula, Mont., Regina, Sask., and Boise, Idaho.

Tour promoter Michael Cohl says ticket prices will be about 10-15% less on the upcoming leg, with an additional $20 discount for students. As-yet-unannounced "young, contemporary opening acts" are promised, according to the band.

An American Express presale begins tomorrow (July 26) for some shows. A limited number of Gold Circle seats will be available, while the remaining 90% of the house will average $89 for stadium shows and $99 for arena gigs.

Additionally, 200 fans will have the opportunity to view each show from onstage, as was the case with the first leg. These seats will also be available at the time of the general public on-sale.

Here are the Rolling Stones' North American tour dates:

This Week's DLs & Reviews

Fair's The Best Worst-Case Scenario

1. Monday
2. The Attic
3. Carelessness
4. The Dumbfounded Game
5. Pause
6. Grab Your Coat
7. Bide My Crime
8. Get You Out Alive
9. Cut Down Sideways
10. Confidently Dreaming
11. Blurry Eyed
12. Unglued

The album is "fair" considering they are not that fantastic live. Their sound is great, but it's either you like them or you don't. The track that really sticks out is "Unglued", which features two of the Dupree sisters from Eisley. It's a beautiful track that you can listen to over and over again.

Here

Every Move A Picture's Heart=Weapon

1. Mission Bell
2. Signs of Life
3. Best Is on the Outside
4. Chemical Burns
5. Outlaw
6. Dust
7. Simple Lessons in Love and Secession
8. On the Edge of Something Beautiful (At 12AM)
9. Dixie
10. St. John's Night

It's been awhile since I first heard Every Move A Picture's "On The Edge Of Something Beautiful (At 12 AM)" and they still make me dance. It's synthetic-pop and they're a darker version of Big City Rock. They remind me of other LA bands like Clear Static and Kissing Tigers.

Download "Signs of Life", "Chemical Burns", and "On The Edge Of Something Beautiful (At 12 AM)"

Feist's Open Season

1. One Evening [Gonzales Solo Piano] [Instrumental]
2. Inside + Out [Apostle of Hustle Unmix Live at the BBC] [Live]
3. Mushaboom [Mocky Mix] [Mix]
4. Gatekeeper [One Room One Hour Mix] [Mix]
5. Lonely Lonely [Frisbee'd Mix] [Mix]
6. Mushaboom [K-Os Mix] [Mix]
7. Snow Lion - Feist,
8. Tout Doucement
9. Simple Story - Jane Birkin, Feist
10. Lovertits - Feist,
11. Mushaboom [Postal Service Remix] [Mix]
12. Gatekeeper [Do Right Mix] [Mix]
13. One Evening [VV Mix] [Mix]
14. When I Was a Young Girl [VV Mix] [Mix]
15. Mushaboom [VV Mix] [Mix]

It's a great collection of remixes plus there are a couple new tracks that won't be found on her Leslie Feist's debut. I don't think that it's necessary to have four different remixes of one song unless of course you like that. Some of the remixes can get tiring after awhile, but "Lonely Lonely" is so beautifully done. It really brings out the meaning of the song and makes you emotional. The highlight of the collection is truly "The Simple Story" with both Feist and Jane Birkin on tracks so how wonderful is that? Their voices match perfectly. You may even enjoy some of the remixes better than the original. "Gatekeeper (One Room One Hour Mix)" is more upbeat and much more jazzed up. The piano solo is just so lovely. All the instruments on this remixed track really complete the song. "Inside + Out (Apostle of Hustle UnMix Live at the BBC)" is slowed down and stripped down, and is acoustic done with one guitar. And I definitely haven't heard "One Evening (Gonzales Solo Piano)" done with just a piano. I instantly fell in love with this song. This version is a classic.

French Kicks' Two Thousand

1. So Far We Are
2. Also Ran
3. Cloche
4. Knee High
5. Keep It Amazed
6. No Mean Time
7. Basement: DC
8. England Just Will Not Let You Recover
9. Hey I Wait I
10. Go On

I'm definitely enjoying this album more than the last. "So Far We Are" has a Walkmen beat to it, which is lovely. Other highlights include "England Will Just Not Let You Recover".

White Whale's WWI (Release Date: July 25, 2006)

1. Nine Good Fingers
2. O'William, O'Sarah
3. The Admiral
4. I Love Lovely Chinese Gal
5. What's An Ocean For?
6. We're Just Temporary Ma'am
7. Forgive The Forgiven
8. Fidget and Fudge
9. Yummyman Farewell
10. King's Indian
11. One Prayer

White Whale is incredible. I was referred to this album by a friend and I'm glad they did. The band features Matt Suggs of Butterglory and Rob Pope of The Get Up Kids, plus members of Thee Higher Burning Fire. Their debut album features some pretty interesting songs. "Fidget and Fudge" has a very mesmerizing chorus.

Finally! Release Date for TVotR Album

It's about time. It's been released forever it seems in the UK. It sucks that we'll have to wait another two months for TV on the Radio's Return To Cookie Mountain album, which is due on September 12th. We've waited long enough with all the illegal copies floating around on the Internet and the $30 Import copies on Amazon. I've been real good and staying from both of those and actually buying a US copy physically so I still havent heard most of those new TVotR tracks.

From Pitchfork again:

September 12! September 12! Shout it from the hilltops! That's the day when the Best New Music'd new TV on the Radio album, Return to Cookie Mountain, will be loosed unto North America, via Interscope Records. (It's been out since July 3 in the UK on 4AD). So put that import copy down and slowly back away from the cash register before some extra cash is unnecessarily wasted. (Unless, of course, you're the kind of person who doesn't like to buy major label albums, in which case, spend away!)

To get psyched for the big Return, check out all these silly TVOTR YouTube clips. According to Billboard.com, a music video for "Wolf Like Me" was filmed over the weekend in Brooklyn.

TV on the Radio also recently announced a late-summer European tour, which will hit up several festivals and a few Massive Attack opening slots. Billboard.com says that a North American tour will coincide with the album's release here.

Flaming Lips & Goldfrapp Remixes

Hopefully they'll be released in the US...

From Pitchfork:

Forget warring with the mystics, the Flaming Lips are now battling the pink Goldfrapp. Wayne and the boys recently remixed the British electro-house duo's track "Satin Chic", available as a digital download on August 14 and as a limited edition 7" picture disc on September 4 on Mute in the UK.

Titled Satin Boys, Flaming Chic, the 7" also features a Goldfrapp remix of the Ordinary Boys' "Boys Will Be Boys", plus some truly scary cover artwork (see above).

In turn, Goldfrapp remixed the Flaming Lips single "The W.A.N.D." ("Supernaturalistic Goldfrapp Remix"), was released in the UK on July 17.

In talking to NME about the remix experience, Wayne Coyne chose some really obscure references: "I believe we veered towards a Nina Simone meets Radiohead kind of mood."

The bands are donning their disco hotpants and rabbit suits, respectively, as they continue playing various dates in the UK and elsewhere. Since we last reported, the Flaming Lips have added a bunch of shows, probably ‘cause they wanted to get more use out of that mirrorball. Their performance at the Hollywood Bowl on Sunday will be filmed for a possible DVD release.

THE FLAMING LIPS/WEEN

Ween

The Flaming Lips

The Flaming Lips/Ween
22 July 2006 Saturday
Greek Theatre $49
Berkeley, CA

It was a fucking amazing show. I'm so glad I chose to go the last minute luckily due to an extra ticket. Part of my goals have definitely been fulfilled as I finally got to see The Flaming Lips live. Another goal that I'd like to complete is to meet Wayne Coyne since he's definitely one of the Top 5 people I want to meet who fascinate me. One day hopefully, one day. Anyways, I arrived just in time at the show for Ween and I was still able to get a good spot so I didn't get to see the opening act Liars, who I heard everyone booed. Poor things. I haven't heard much from them except for two songs I must say. They were better than I thought. Some of their music don't interest me, but there were songs that stuck out for me and I liked them. They were really good performers especially since they didn't need any special effects or visuals to surprise the crowd and get them into the show. Their guitar solos were good, but not great when compared to other bands. What disappointed me a lot was that Ween did a full and long set, while The Flaming Lips had to cut short their set because of a damn curfew.

The Flamings Lips were so good. I think they would probably be boring without all the visuals, but WITH the visuals they just made their performance even better. It tops every other performance visually. The many balloons, streamers, and confetti filled the Greek Theatre. Fans picked out and dressed in alien and Santa costumes filled the stage as dancers. The song performances that really stood out were the Yeah Yeah Yeah Song and The W.A.N.D. that really makes you want to jump and knock people over, which isn't very polite, but what the hell. The set started out with Wayne crawling in a bubble over the crowd. I was lucky enough to be in the front row and right where he was getting lifted off onto the crowd. Both arms up people! I was hoping that he didn't stop doing that. Some of the set was predictable for fans who have seen their performances before, but it is still amazing. I'd see them again and again if I could because that's how good they are.

The Mother, The Mechanic, And The PathA lovely 3-disc album from The Early November! It's a great collection of songs and worth a listen, but there are a few weaknesses here and there. Some of the songs aren't THAT great. I think the first disc is the best featuring one of my favorite songs from this band "Decoration". I love the track just as much as the demo of the song that was released earlier. I think I can really feel the demo version, but the guitars on the album version are a lot finer. Highlights include "No Good at Saying Sorry" and "Figure It Out".

SONIC YOUTH/AWESOME COLOR

Sonic Youth/Awesome Color
3 July 2006
Empire $25
Sacramento, CA

On the eve of Independence Day, about a thousand spectators packed into the Empire in downtown Sacramento for one of the most hyped events of the summer. Indie darlings Sonic Youth played before a packed house on their most recent tour stop promoting their latest
album, Rather Ripped. The crowd for the Sonic Youth show was one of the most diverse crowds I have ever seen as 12 year olds and parents who have grown up listening to Sonic Youth gather along the front of the stage.

Playing against a backdrop of patterned lights and cool colors, Sonic Youth began their electrifying set with their new single Incinerate. They played mostly tracks from their new album, but played a few oldies. The band knows how to entertain a crowd with Kim Gordon’s subtle, yet hypnotic dancing and Thurston Moore’s wildness. The climax of the show came early as Moore slid his guitar against his amp and speakers then jumped into the crowd only to find himself having trouble returning to the stage. They had not one, but two encores, which was more than enough while playing a good two hours. Rats has amazing beats, but wearing ear plugs is necessary when standing in close proximity to the amps and speakers. The crowd was entertained throughout their set, but what I found pessimistic was that most of the crowd was stiff.

Awesome Color was the opening band and they were pretty good, but of course Sonic Youth blew everyone away. There were some misunderstandings unfortunately at the beginning of the show that I experienced, but overall it ended up to be a fantastic show and well worth it!

Sonic Youth's Set List:

Incinerate
Reena
Catholic Block
Pattern
Rapture?
What A Waste
Eric’s Trip
Turquoise Boy
Sunday
Rats
100%
Pink Steam

Lights Out
