We Are Scientists on Filter

From Filter:

Filter's Top 10 of 2006, Day Twenty Four: We Are Scientists
by Staff | 12.24.2006

Not many bands have to leave LA to gain success, but then We Are Scientists aren’t like every other band! After moving to New York and quickly establishing themselves on the scene, the band released their major label debut, With Love and Squalor in January this year. The band also have an ace up their sleeves with their memorable videos directed by Akiva Schaffer, the writer/director responsible for “Lazy Sunday.” Here’s the band’s favorite albums of the year:

Peaches/HERMS/Whitey/Jeffree Star

Peaches/HERMS/Whitey/Jeffree Star
15 December 2006
Empire
Sacramento, CA

What is up with me being late to shows? I never even made it to this one even though I bought my ticket more than a month in advance. I arrived at the venue half an hour after the show actually ended (9:45pm). I forgot it was club night. What a disappointment.

... Trail of Dead/The Blood Brothers

... Trail of Dead/The Blood Brothers/Celebration/Brothers & Sisters
4 December 2006
The Library
Sacramento, CA

I never wrote a review for this so here it is. I never made it in time to see Brothers & Sisters or even Celebration. I was disappointed since I had missed Celebration already at Coachella. I didn't know what to expect from The Blood Brothers, but I had heard great things about them. I only got into them halfway through their electrifying set. They were a fun band to watch, and a unique one as well. I was mainly there for Trail of Dead since I didn't even see Celebration. Trail of Dead was great, but the sound was so shitty. It sounded terrible near the front of the stage so I had to move out of the crowd in order to hear the sound a bit clearer. I was only disappointed that they didn't perform "Stand In Silence".

Casino Royale

Daniel Craig is been one of my favorite actors and despite all the hate he was receiving since it was announced he was going to play Bond, I did not believe it. I knew he was going to make a great Bond and he did. I saw the first filming of Casino Royale last night and it was good. It was indeed darker than all the previous Bond films and it is something that will take awhile to adjust to because even I was so used to unrealistic Bond films of the past. The film was definitely not cheesy. Okay, a few parts were like when Caterina Murino was riding on that fucking horse down the beach. I wanted to cringe it was so cheesy. There were a few things that I missed from the previous films. Sure, Craig looks pretty creepy in The Jacket, but he is a very talented actor and anyone who does not think he looks hot as Bond is crazy. I did not think that Eva Green was going to make a good Bond girl, but I take that back now. She did a fine job, but at times she looked a bit scary. If you've seen the film already, I'm sure you know what part(s). This film was a lot more realistic and I am sure a lot of people are looking forward to the next one.

Get Well Soon... Matt Tong Collapses

From Filter:

Bloc Party Drummer Collapses, Dates Cancelled

by Staff | 11.10.2006

Bloc Party drummer Matt Tong collapsed in Atlanta following their show. Tong fell ill shortly after the band’s set, and was taken to a local hospital where doctors assured that he is in a comfortable condition and not in any danger. It is still unclear as to when he will be able to return to drumming.

A spokesperson told the BBC that the injury may be due to Matt’s drumming: "Matt is known for his energetic drumming style," she said. "It's not clear at this stage when he will be fit to resume performing."

A message on the band’s website asserts that they will not be playing at the Charlotte, NC, Fairfax, VA or either New York shows in the coming week.

OLIVER STONE

OLIVER STONE (Lecture)
8 November 2006
CSUS Union Ballroom
Sacramento, CA

It's official. Oliver Stone scares the shit out of me. So he's famous, but he still can get ticked off like any normal person. His lecture was pretty dull and I'm sure his Q&A was less dull. It's an honor to have him lecture at the school, but either he is really tired from other engagements or he is just not a good public speaker. I'll consider the first option because meeting with fans was not THAT great. I'm sure he is a nice person, but when he gets annoyed he is fucking scary. If you are wondering if I annoyed him, then yes I did and I'm sorry for it, but I thought he expected it from me since he was eyeballing what I had for him to sign at the beginning of the signing and I ended up asking him at the end when he was fucking tired. But not so much as the crazy lady who popped up everywhere giving him letters and random shit. I've learned my lesson, now learn yours.

JACKIE GREENE/CHRIS WEBSTER

JACKIE GREENE/CHRIS WEBSTER
2 November 2006
CSUS University Ballroom
Sacramento, CA

Sacramento has definitely not forgotten Jackie Greene. It was one of the best performances I saw all semester long at CSUS. Chris Webster was good, but Jackie Greene was amazing. Greene seems pretty reserved, but that didn't affect his onstage performance. The highlight of the night for me was when he performed "Just As Well". Every part of the performance was perfection. His brother Alex of Walking Spanish joined him onstage near the end of their set as well.

Setlist:

Hollywood
Rusty Nail
Farewell, So Long, Goodbye
By The Side Of The Road
When You're Walking Away
Uphill Road
Tell Me Mama
So Hard To Find My Way
Just As Well
I Don't Live In A Dream
Down In The Valley Woe
Mexican Girl
Closer To You
Lord Mistreats Me
I'm So Gone

Cold Black Devil

OK GO/Quit Your Day Job

OK GO/Quit Your Day Job
3 November 2006
Empire
Sacramento, CA

Damien Kulash
is an asshole. There, I said it, but I'm still a Tim fan. Why do I think he's an asshole? He could've acted like a bitch all night because the sound was fucking up a bit on him, but that gives him no fucking right to treat fans that way. Fans pay money to see them perform and to keep them in existence so band members shouldn't act like they're above everyone and that they deserve everything. It's not like OK Go is fucking U2. He pretty much beat my friend up and he maybe accidentally knocked my shit over so I had to pick up the piles. He was fucking pissed about the sound and he ended up pissing me and my friend off. Besides all that shit, I thought they are great to see live because they really interact with the crowd. They also included an acoustic performance in the middle of the room during the middle of the set. They had some fans who entered their video contest to go up and do the "A Million Ways" dance while the band did the dance themselves closing the show. Their music isn't the best, but they're fun to see live.

And Quit Your Day Job? Damn they're weird, but they were seriously high so that is probably a reason why.

Interesting, they will be stopping by CSUS. From Filter:

Little Radio Headed To A Campus Near You
by Staff | 11.02.2006

Little Radio isn’t just about awesome music, it also has a social conscience. The online radio station/aggregated blogzine/live venue is branching out to teach the world about the wonders of the electric car.

Partnering with LA-based Zero Air Pollution Vehicles (ZAP), Little Radio plans to open the world’s first electric-only car showroom. Little Radio's L.A. Electric Cars showroom, located at 1214 Long Beach Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90021 will open on November 24, 2006, and will showcase the ZAP Xebra 4-door sedan and 2-door truck, both of which sell for around $10,000. The company expects to carry more than 5 different models of 100% Electric Cars by the end of next year.

Not content to just bring this electric marvel to the people of LA, they are taking it on the road, hitting up college campuses and music festivals. The company will travel in a 45' BioBus powered by BioDiesel fuel, with an exterior wrap designed by artist Shepard Fairey (OBEY/Giant), and will bring several ZAP cars with them for local showcases and test drives.

They’ll also be celebrating with a party this Saturday the 4th with Giant Drag, Bloodcat Love and DJ sets from J-Logic and High Noon. Festivities start at 7pm at at 1214 Long Beach Ave.

It's Absurd! Arctic Monkeys Thrown Out

Arctic Monkeys

ARCTIC MONKEY THROWN OUT OF AFTERSHOW PARTY

ARCTIC MONKEYS rocker JAMIE COOK was thrown out of a Q Music Awards after-show party in the early hours of Tuesday (31OCT06) after refusing to pay his drinks bill. Following the newcomers' double win at the London ceremony, the WHEN THE SUN GOES DOWN hitmakers joined their fellow rockers at the Met Bar in the British capital's West End. However, the group failed to realise the Met were not providing free drinks like the awards earlier is the evening and guitarist Cook refused to pay a GBP22 ($39) bill for his drinks. Cook fumes, "There was no way I was paying GBP22 for two beers. I mean, GBP22, it's a disgrace. "I'm broke anyway so I was even more annoyed. I threw a bit of a strop and refused to pay."

'Marie Antoinette' Film

Jason Schwartzman & Kirsten Dunst in Marie Antoinette

So I finally saw Marie Antoinette. I love Sofia Coppola, but this film was just okay to me. The only thing that I liked besides the costumes and cinematography was the fact that she placed MA and Louis XVI in a positive light. Jason Schwartzman was the perfect Louis XVI and he made me laugh throughout the beginning of the film. I sympathized them. Kirsten Dunst was amazing like usual, but I didn't realize that she was going to have an American accent in the film. I'm glad Coppola didn't have the American actors put on a fake accent because it probably wouldn't have been as funny and it would've been ridiculous.

There wasn't really a point to the film, which is what I don't like about it. It was difficult to pay attention to the film with the soundtrack that Coppola provided. Don't get me wrong, the soundtrack is amazing and is one of the best soundtracks I heard in a while, but I couldn't pay attention to what was happening in the film nor what the characters were saying.

It seemed that Marie Antoinette led a boring life. And Jamie Dornan is hot, but I didn't know he was THAT hot. Molly Shannon and Shirley Henderson made the perfect duo and it was interesting to see Shannon in a period film. In the end, I felt bad that members of the royal family had to die even in reality.

Though the gig was fantastic. I even got Keith and Michael to sign my ticket afterwards. Im gutted that Chris refused to sign it because he was more interested in the ugly, skanky groupie that was hanging off him! So Chris, you've gone down in my estimation. I thought if anyone would sign my ticket it would be you!! Do yourself a favour and lose the groupies and interact with your real fans a bit more mate Embarassed

Hey, Leroy Brown. Glad you enjoyed the show last night -- I really am, but I'm a little bit furious with you. Here's why, you shitpiece: that "skanky groupie" who was "hanging" on me when you asked me for my autograph last night? Her name's Storme Whitby-Grubb and she's our tour manager, and a good friend of mine. Did she look a little bit like this?

Yeah, that's our tour manager, Storme. I'm not a violent person, Leroy, but I'd love to whip you raw with my belt right now, you stupid child, for two reasons:

(1) You slandered my friend, Storme -- assumed that since she's a girl (a girl with a walkie-talkie and a staff-seargent's demeanor), she's a hanger on instead of a puppet master; and called her an "ugly, skanky groupie", despite the fact that neither a total stranger nor a close acquaintaince of Storme's would ever describe her using any of those three words. So you're explicitly a liar.

(2) You're a liar by exemption. You neglected to mention that at the time you requested my autograph, you were standing at the side of the stage, completely out of civilian territory, without any reason for being there, and approached us as we came off stage after an hour and fifteen minutes of playing music. At a time like that, what we love to do is to head down to the dressing room for ten or twenty minutes and have a beer and change out of our soaked pants (we piss them a lot during the shows). Later, when we leave the building, we typically sign every last body part of every single person who has bothered to hang around to say hi. But as we leave the stage? Common sense should probably have told you this is not the time to try to shoot the shit with us. I'm glad Keith and Michal signed your ticket -- I'm sure I would've done the same if Storme hadn't been there shielding me from you and tugging me along -- but I'm also sort of amazed you'd have the cheek to first sneak backstage, then get in our faces as we walk off-stage, and finally -- and this alone is what makes you a nutsack full of catshit -- come on this message board and accuse me of cheating on my girlfriend.

The moral, Leroy, on the off chance you're as fucking thick as you seem:
- Impose on a person's kindness if you must, but don't then criticize him if he doesn't reward you for doing it. Instead, accept that you took a shot and it missed, and take a minute to shake off the blush of momentary shame that accompanies imposition.
- Don't concoct facts that can interfere with another person's family, unless you're doing it out of revenge because the other person did something equally despicable to you. In a case where the horrible thing he did was not to sign your ticket, slander is a pretty big overreaction.

Leroy, you've gone down in my estimation a bit, too, mate. Here are your options: You can apologize, which I would prefer, because I'm a sucker and have no use for antipathy and would love to sign your goddamn lease for you in golden ink next time we meet. Or you can contest even one word of what I've written above, in which case -- and I'm going to phrase this humorously in order to defuse any sense of false bravado that might otherwise attach, but in essence I'm not kidding even a little bit -- if I see you again we're going to have a duel in the street.

-Chris

It's An Outrage! Starlight Mints/Bishop Allen/Tom Heinl in Sacramento

What good is it for bands to play in 21 and up venues? The age group of many fans of some bands are teenagers because they're the ones who spend the most money. Anyways, here's a Sacramento show that's coming up that should NOT be missed, unless you're under 21 then sucks for you unless you're lucky to have a fake ID. And don't even go there with the insurance policies on alcohol etc.

Starlight Mints / Bishop Allen / Tom Heinl
